There are not typical cost estimates for immigration attorneys, but here are some guidelines that will help you understand the cost structure:
Many immigration lawyers offer a free or low priced ($75-$150) consultation prior to signing any agreement, take advantage of these offers.

I probably saved $1000 just by reading one book on immigration. Thank you for telling me about the Nolo Immigration books.

Common immigration issue:
If you have a relatively common immigration issue such as marriage visas, H1B application, citizenship application or investor visas (among others), you can expect to work with an immigration attorney on a flat fee.
Expect the flat fees to be anywhere from $500 for basic form filing to $5000 for more complicated filings like investor visas.
Complicated immigration issues:
If your immigration issue is more complicated and requires more forms and therefore more time, you are likely going to pay by the hour. Immigration lawyers may charge an hourly rate of $100-$400.
You pay a retainer: an up-front payment to an attorney. The attorney deducts money from the retainer as the work is done; when the retainer is used up, you are billed for more money.
Consultation only:
You can also hire an immigration lawyer for consultation only and file the paperwork yourself using the forms and other resources provided by the USCIS. However, some visa types require to be filed by an attorney.
More things to consider:
- Remember that the USCIS filing fees are never included in the attorney fees
- You may qualify for the USCIS fee waiver program
- Learn about your specific immigration issue before meeting a lawyer, this will greatly reduce the cost for the initial meetings ( immigration books).
- Your employer might offer assistance with the visa process.
- You might find a “pro bono” immigration lawyer, especially if you have an asylum or deportation case
